The view of the Grand River from the J.W. Marriott Hotel in downtown

Grand Rapids.   The walkway on the right runs along the river for blocks.

Ab Nab Wen Park is to the left behind the trees lining the riverfront, where

you can see original Native American mounds that were left by the earliest

human settlers to the river valley.

grand river south at knapp st

The Grand River is the longest river in Michigan, running from Hillsdale

near the Indiana border, up to Lansing, and then turning west towards Grand

Rapids and eventually emptying into Lake Michigan.  Its watershed drains an

area of 5,572 miles including 18 counties and 158 townships.

The native people who lived here called the river  O-wash-ta-nong, meaning

“Far-away-water” because of its length, 260 miles.

With fall fast approaching, scenes such as the one above are common here

in West Michigan.  This photo was taken on the Knapp Street bridge in Ada

township.

Michigan Free Fishing Weekend June 12-13, 2010

Michigan Free Fishing Weekend  June 12- 13, 2010

As summer in Michigan approaches, Michiganders start to

gravitate toward the 11,037 inland lakes, 36,350 miles of rivers

or streams, or the 3288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline available

for recreation in Michigan [ Included are 12,000 miles

of trout waters].  In fact, there is so much water

available, that wherever you are in Michigan, you are never

more than 6 miles away from a body of water.

If you have fond memories of fishing with your Dad or grand-

parents, then why not create your own memories this weekend?

The Michigan Dept of Natural Resources has declared that you can

fish in any Michigan inland or Great Lakes waters for all species of

fish – without a license – this weekend.

Please note that all fishing regulations still apply.

And don’t forget about safety.  You are still required to follow

all watercraft laws.  So, get out the poles, grab some bait,

and get fishing!

Roselle Park at Flood Stage Ada Michigan

We took a drive along the Grand River last week and took in some

local sites.  The Grand River was a full flood stage and it changed the

scenery in a few places. This short video was taken at Roselle Park

in Ada Township Michigan.  This park is a 274 acre natural preserve

right on the banks of the Grand River.  It normally has some swampy

areas, but nothing like the scenes in the video.  Usually you have to

walk about 100 yards to get close to the river.

Since we didn’t bring our wading boots, we stayed near the entrance and

just shot our video.  We will go back and photograph the park without

water soon.
