Lowell Michigan King Milling Plans 2011 Expansion

Lowell Michigan King Milling Plans 2011 Expansion

If you have ever been to Lowell Michigan, you can’t miss

the King Milling Company. It dominates the small town skyline with

its huge grain storage towers and milling processing equipment.

Well, that is about to change in a big way. The King Milling Company

is undergoing an expansion which will double their capacity to store

grain and flour.   The expansion will be literally going up soon, as

a 90 foot building will be erected, six multistory concrete storage

towers and a new load out machinery will be part of the 11+ million

dollar expansion to this savvy survivor of the grain milling business

in Michigan.

The King Milling Company’s website states that they started

business in 1890, along with 700 other flour mills in Michigan.

In 1958 the number of mills in state was 28, today there are

13 left, of which some are very small operations.

1850 flour grinding Millstone

From its humble beginnings with a stone wheel to the

prodigious production of today  – King Milling grinds  800,000

pounds of white flour/day.  It is pretty safe to say, if you eat

a flour product in West Michigan, it was processed at the King

Milling Company.  Another West Michigan company that you

probably never heard of, but is pretty important to our local

economy.

The size and perspective of these storage silos is very

hard to appreciate unless you see them up close.

knew existed but is pretty important to our local economy.

Weed or Flower?  As a child, Queen Anne’s Lace or Wild Carrot

was one of my favorite wild flowers.  So ethereal in appearance but

tough as nails – even growing by the side of the road, with no water

or fertilizer from a gardener’s hand.  Just Mother Nature spreading

her bounty to the fields and by-ways of Michigan.

As an adult, I respect the perseverance of this tough customer.

A few of these plants are allowed to mature in my gardens every year.

Because I have a soft spot for this lacy rogue and it brings back

happy childhood summertime memories.

Memories of icy, cold lemonade, burgers on the grill, and a vase

of wildflowers for the picnic table on a hot, July day.  Memories

of softball games in the front yard,  rides to the Tastee-Freeze

for ice cream cones after supper, and chasing fireflies and

star-gazing after darkness finally fell.

Summer is a magical time in Michigan, especially evenings.

They are  long and the light will last until almost ten o’clock.  Which is

great fun is you are a kid playing with your friends or an adult, enjoying the

last hours of a wonderful day.

This photo was taken on the summer solstice in 2010 at Glen Lake in

Northern Michigan at around 9 pm.  A perfect evening in a perfect place.

That’s Michigan summer.

Treehouse

I admit I love trees and I love houses.  What could be more perfect

than a darling tree house that looks like something Hansel and Gretel

would have stumbled upon in the big, dark forest?

I have been fascinated with this tree house in the our area for

some time.  It can only be seen when the leaves are off the trees.

I wanted a photo of it and managed to remember that fact when we

were out driving in the area the other day.

If you are looking for a house in the woods, give us a call.

There are many homes available near Grand Rapids that are in a

heavily wooded area, with a little more square footage.

Grand Rapids Michigan has lots of smart people.  These smart people

tend to like education, in all forms.  This has resulted in 18 different colleges,

universities and higher level education schools located in our metro area.

Grand Rapids is a college town.  Yes, really.  We have around 77,000

students attending higher education schools in the Grand Rapids area.  This

is a larger number than attend MSU[47,000] and U of M[41,000], respectively.

This is a great resource for local businesses and our communities.  Above, is
