3200 flags fly for 5 days to commemorate the victims

of the Sept 11, 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers

in New York.  From Sept 9-3th 2011, these flags were flown at the

Cannonsburg Ski Resort.  They were tagged with the names and

biographies of the victims.

If you didn’t get a chance to see them, we have a video walk

through from top to bottom above for you to experience.

Grand Rapids ArtPrize 2011 Opens in 1 Week

What do encyclopedia pages, twine, horsehair, firecrackers,

paper-cuts and aged bronze all have in common?  The GRAM, of course.

We previewed a few of the ArtPrize 2011 installations at the Grand

Rapids Art Museum Sunday and have included a few photos of the

diverse entries displayed.

Branches_Unbound_Wendy_Wahl

This piece is made from steel and encyclopedia pages.  I knew I shouldn’t

have got rid of that old set of World Books.

14123.56.11_T Natalie Andrews

This unusual piece is made from twine. Ditto above statement.

Illegitimate_2011_bronze_Timothy_Cleary

Even bronze woman and I have a pose in common.

War_Rug_Project_2011_Barbara_Koenen

Many unusual materials were used to recreate this replica

of a war rug.  Did you guess firecrackers?

wagon_wheel_with_single_ascending_probiscus_2011_Millicent_Young

Horsehair, grapevine, and a hand hewn wheel comprise

the elements of this entry.

The_Tempest_11_Laura_Young

The depth and intricacy of this entry has to be seen to

be appreciated.  I had difficulty with paper snowflakes!

Don’t miss ArtPrize 2011 this year!  It starts on Wed Sept 21.

These and about 1200 other pieces that will stretch your

imagination are waiting for you to view.

Michigan School Bus Safety Driving Facts!!

Michigan School Bus Safety Fall Driving Facts!!

Not stopping for a local school bus when it’s lights are flashing

red can be more expensive this year.  The Michigan legislature

has passed a law that doubles the fines for drivers who fail to

stop for school buses with flashing red lights during school

transportation times.

School bus by looli

SCHOOL BUSES ARE LIKE TRAFFIC SIGNALS!!!

  • Prepare to stop when a slowing school bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing.
  • Stop at least 20 feet away for buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway.
  • Slow down in or near school and residential areas.
  • Look for clues such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles and playgrounds – that indicate children might be in the area.
  • Watch for children between parked cars and other objects.
  • Use additional caution in bad weather.

If we all pay attention and drive safely this year, our children will be safer.

Fish Ladder Sculpture Grand Rapids MI

To help the salmon that are trying to reach their spawning grounds

in the upper reaches of the Grand River and its tributaries, this Fish Ladder

was installed at one of the main drops in the Grand River.  Even with the

help of the ladder, they still have a Herculean task to get up  the Grand

River in downtown Grand Rapids.  Fish Ladder on Grand River

The Fish Ladder was installed in 1974 and is a favorite spot to watch

the fish return up river in the fall.  Joseph E Kinnebrew IV, designed the

Fish Ladder Sculpture that allows the fish to climb the dam at Fourth Street

and Front NW.

We have seen the fish so thick that the ducks can walk on their backs

to catch treats thrown in for them.  If you visit when the salmon are

running, be sure to bring a bag of bread crumbs!

View of GR from ladder

Grand views of our local city and riverfront are visible from here.

You can see the many cranes and buildings going up on Michigan Avenue,

also known as The Medical Mile. The VanAndel Institute, Butterworth Hospital,

Lemmon-Holton Cancer Center, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and the

Michigan State University Medical School.

Grand Rapids Medical Mile from Fish Ladder

A small public city park adjoins the fish ladder and is a great spot

to bring a picnic lunch and watch the activity on the river.

Fishermen were pulling huge salmon from the river when we visited the

other day.  The salmon are on their way upstream from Lake Michigan.

Birch tree at FL park

Did you think Grand Rapids was named for the river that flows through it?

Yes, and for the treacherous and lengthy rapids that existed here.

Grand River Rapids Wall

The rapids have long been tamed with reinforced concrete walls that

step the rapids down gradually along the length of the river through the city.

Whether you come to fish or just watch the fish jumping, it is a fascinating

spectacle every fall in Grand Rapids.

In case you have never heard of this organization, The Kent County

Community Emergency Response Team is a group of local volunteers who

are dedicated to educating, informing and assisting the public in responding

to emergency disasters in their local community.  We became members because

we think it is important to support our local community and we feel disaster

preparedness is vital to a community’s welfare.

Did You Know?  If a disaster strikes the metro Grand Rapids area, there are

only 10,000 police, firemen, and emergency responders to try to handle the

needs of over a million people?  Needless to say, citizen volunteers will be

needed.  If you feel that this might be of interest to you – contact:

If you are of a certain age, these classic cars shown at the Classic Car Show

in Wyoming Michigan on July 24, 2011 at the Resurrection Life Church will

bring back lots of memories.

Metro Car Cruise Byron Center MI

I really appreciated the details on this classic car from the 1950’s.  I recall

those white interiors and the fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror.

The drive in restaurant tray with the food really brought back our younger

days.  We used to get strawberry pie from Big Boy’s on Pearl St

delivered by car hop!  Can you remember those days??
