Do You Have A Pint to Spare??? Michigan Blood Center Needs You

The Michigan Blood Center is an unlikely coffee break stop. But that is precisely

when I like to stop in and get my juice and cookies.  It is located at 1036 Fulller Ave. NE

Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

Of course, they like to take a little of my Type O blood before they give

out the cookies.  I am one of those fortunate enough to live in a community that has

a generous and giving population. The Michigan Blood Center has branches and donation

centers all over Kent County and supplies 100% of the regular blood to our hospitals from

many West Michigan counties.

DID YOU KNOW???cutest baby in the world

  • a new born baby has about 8 oz. or 1 cup of blood
  • Every three seconds someone in our country needs blood
  • Blood banks often run short of Type O and B blood
  • Just one pint of blood can help up to 3 people
  • 43,000 pints of donated blood are used each day in the US and Canada
  • shortages of all types of blood occur most often during summer & winter holidays
  • donating blood will not decrease your strength

They also do aspheresis, marrow, stem cells, and cord blood donations.

I have donated to the aspheresis patients numerous times when The Blood

Center calls with a desperate need for a donor.  How can you resist when they

tell you a little 12 year old girl has leukemia and needs your platelets to survive?

This is one of those situations where you don’t appreciate this gift

until you or your loved ones need it. Please consider giving the gift of life to

someone in need. It takes  a few moments out of your day and you get a free

coffee/juice break!!

                    DO YOUR GOOD DEED TODAY.

The Thornapple Daily Grill in Ada Michigan

2013 UPDATE: This restaurant has been sold and remodeled,

operating under a different name.

By Bonnie & Terry Westbrook

The Thornapple Daily Grill is located at 445 Ada Drive, Ada, MI.

It is nestled in the back of a commercial development on the banks of the

Thornapple River in the heart of Ada and less than 10 minutes from

downtown Grand Rapids.  The Daily Grill is now part of The Gilmore Collection,

a group who owns and operates many restaurants in our area.

The Daily Grill Ada MI real estate information blog

This restaurant boasts a wonderful bar, several dining rooms with different

views, an intimate wine cellar, and outside dining on the patio in summer.

Serving lunch or dinner, this restaurant has been a favorite of ours for over 25 years.

We were first introduced to White Chicken Chili here and the TBA sandwich,

both favorites of ours. The menu offers simple fare and also complex delights…….always delicious.

The wine list always has something to offer that is new. The chef prepares dishes with locally

grown products which is a plus for us. We live in a diverse agricultural area and there are

many small farms supplying food to our local restaurants and populace.

We have many memories of dinners, lunches, and good times with friends at this local eatery.

Please try it if you  are in our area.  Look around, I might be sitting near by enjoying some chili and a night out with friends.

Ada Township Assembly Hall in Ada Michigan

The Ada Township Assembly Hall was originally the First Congregational Church of Ada, United Church of Christ, established in 1870, an excellent use of an older structure and very green in today’s building and use standards.   The building was rededicated as the Ada Township Assembly Hall in 1990, as the original sign out front for the bulletins (pictured below) attests.

Ada Township was very much in the forefront of the green environmental movement in deciding to use this historic building in this way.

The historic building is used for township monthly meetings and other township assemblies. As you can see, the original pews, stained glass windows, and lighting were kept intact.

The newer Ada Township offices were attached to the back of the church and house the assessor, clerk and water departments and other offices.   This is where you need to go to check with the clerk’s office about  paying your water/sewer bill, or getting  your burn permits.                                                                                                    ada township mi assembly hall ada mi real estate information

THE GRILLE RESTAURANT AT WATERMARK COUNTRY CLUB

The Grille is the closest restaurant to us and because I am at the golf course A LOT, we eat here on a pretty regular basis. I usually have the chicken salad but my wife always gets the lake perch. She says they are the best lake perch she has ever orderd, bar none. Believe me, she has tried lake perch all over, even in Switzerland.

Note: They don’t serve the Lake Perch anymore April 2009

They have a great casual menu, you can eat at the bar or on the patio (weather permitting). And the dining room serves a list of wonderful entrees. They recently put in a wood fired pizza oven, which offers 7 different types plus a build-your-own, so you can get pizza just as you like it and hot from the oven.

In the larger dining room, views of the golf course are seen from this bank of windows. The blazing  fireplace can’t be seen on this picture, it is just to my left. The bar and lounge is behind this fireplace area with lounge chairs that cozy up to the fire, so nice on a cold winter’s night.

Large banquet rooms are straight ahead in the photo above.  Two smaller banquet or private party rooms are just off the lounge and entrance area in the photo on the right.

Chef Eric Chatlin says: Food is sustenance for the soul and body. Here at The Grille we focus on providing the highest quality fresh ingredients, presented in an artistically pleasing wasy. I buy many foods locally and seasonally. Our menu changes with the seasons and with the foods that are available through local farmers. By purchasing locally, we are supporting our community and enjoying the freshest produce and meats Michigan can offer.

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park The Outdoor Sculptures

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park The Outside Sculptures

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a world class park with world

class attractions in Grand Rapids, Michigan.   This is more than a garden,

it is a community and area treasure with many aspects of the fine arts on

permanent and traveling displays. Listed below are the major attractions:

  • The Sculpture Park
  • Gallery Collection
  • Garden Trails & Conservatory Collection
  • Sculpture Exhibitions
  • Children’s Garden
  • Outdoor Concert Stage

Because this park offers so many attractions, I will just cover The Sculpture Park.

The 30+ acre Sculpture Park is set within the gardens 125 acre site.  It features over 80

outdoor sculptures from reknowned artists, including one of the two existing bronzes

of DaVinci’s Horse Sculpture.  Visiting artists are continually  featured, so you see

new artists’ works set into the Gardens.

Artists represented in the Park include August Rodin, Aristide  Maillol,

Jacques Lipchitz, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Mark di Suvero, Magdalena Abakanowicz,

George Rickey, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje can Bruggen, Juan Munoz, Hanneke Beaumont,

Louise Bourgeois, and Mimmo Paladino are featured.  This open air museum has the most

comprehensive collection of outdoor sculptures within the Midwest.

There is a special element of discovery that permeates the park – you can

view the sculptures in and through meadows and trees, valleys and hills from many

different vantage points.  The Sculpture Park includes a variety of tour options: guided

tram tours, adult guided walking tours (special dates and times)

and self-guided audio tours.

meijer garden davincis horsegrand rapids mi real estate

If you haven’t made it to the Meijer Gardens yet, Leonardo DaVinci’s

Horse, Il Cavallo alone is worth the trip.  Pictured above, the scale is gigantic.

This equestrian giant weighs 15 tons and is 24 feet tall.  What you can’t see is the

placement, set in an area between hills so the horse  can’t be viewed until you wind

around the gentle hills and there in the middle of a plaza sets the most magnificent

bronze equestrian sculpture in North America. The most amazing part is that the

15th Century horse was only created in clay by Leonardo and  destroyed by the

French Army when they invaded Milan, Italy in 1499 before it could be cast.  His

blueprints and drawings were closely followed and this masterpiece came into being

in 1999 when the artist, Nina Akamu, cast the bronze form at an art foundry

in New York state.  The second casting was shipped and unveiled in Milan, Italy in

Sept, 1999, 500 years to the day after DaVinci abandoned his project.

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a world class park with world class attractions in Grand Rapids, Michigan.   This is more than a garden, it is a community and area treasure with many aspects of the fine arts on permanent and traveling displays. Listed below are the major attractions:

  • The Sculpture Park

  • Gallery Collection
  • Garden Trails & Conservatory Collection
  • Sculpture Exhibitions
  • Children’s Garden
  • Outdoor Concert Stage

Because there are so many aspects to the gardens, I will only discuss The Conservatory Gardens in this article.

Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory is more than 5 stories tall and features tropical plants from 5 continents as well as waterfalls and misty streambeds. Palms reaching over 30 feet amidst banana and coconut trees, bromeliads, and a changing display of over 3500 orchid plant collection.

F meijer garden conservatory terry westbrook gr mi real estate blog

They have a special Butterfly Exhibit in the conservatory every spring starting in late March and running through  the middle of April. Hundreds of butterfly cocoons are brought in and they hatch at different times so there are always tropical butterflies to see.  They have special feeding stations set up through out the conservatory for them. There is also a special entry constructed to go and out of so the butterflies do not escape the conservatory environment where they would perish because of the lower temperature outside.

                                          butterfly exhibit at meijer gardens

The conservatory is always kept about 80 degrees for the tropical plants. Stepping into this in the middle of winter is a real treat.

There is a waterfall constructed you can walk under, plus a bridge and a winding circular pathway through the conservatory gardens where the permanent orchid exhibit can be seen.  There is always something blooming in conservatory.  Why don’t you treat yourself and your family soon?  If you haven’t been to the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, you should plan a trip to Grand Rapids soon.

Ada Township Adds 96 acres to Chief Hazy Cloud Park on Grand River

Ada Township: Purchase adds 96 acres to park — Chief Hazy Cloud Park is expanding.

The Kent County Parks Department finalized a deal last month with Edith Pettis to purchase 96 acres for the 24 acre park on Pettis Avenue north of M-21 in Ada. The purchase adds 1,900 feet to the park’s 2,900 feet of Grand River frontage.

river scene ada mi

A $1.1 million grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund paid for 74 percent of the purchase, and the parks department is working with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan to raise the estimated $280,000 local match required. Parks director Roger Sabine said corporate and private donors have pledged about $175,000. The township’s Open Space Preservation Advisory Board also is considering a donation.

Board members said during a recent meeting that they plan to conduct a natural features inventory of the property — required of all potential open-space purchases — to determine how much to contribute.

Chief Hazy Cloud Park, named in 1928 for an American Indian chief who was said to worship hazy clouds, is part of 61 recreational projects and land acquisitions totaling more than $36 million being funded by the state through royalties from the sale and lease of state-owned mineral rights.

Sabine has said the expansion will focus on “low-key” uses, such as relocating the parking lot and restrooms and adding walking trails.

This will be a great addition to the Grand Rapids area park system, especially for those residents living north of Fulton Ave and the Grand River. Located right on the Grand River with scenic views to the village of Ada to the Southwest, it should be enjoyed by many for years to come. We will let you know how this park progresses.

The Children's Garden in Grand Rapids Michigan ~ Frederick Meijer Gardens

Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids Michigan has a very special Children’s Garden. Admission is included with your daily ticket or membership ticket. At over 5 acres, it is one of the largest Children’s Gardens in the nation. This is a magical place for children of all ages, even the entrance is designed with children in mind: right beside the large entance is a mouse hole arched entrance with a gate. All of the Children’s Garden is wheelchair accessible, even Tree House Village.

We try to take our grandson, Jeffy, whenever he comes to visit. Come take a quick photo tour with us of the Children’s Garden.

The Children’s Garden has 10 Different Areas to Explore: frederick meijer childrens garden

  • Kids Sense Garden
  • Great lakes Garden
  • Story-Telling Garden
  • Wooded Wetlands
  • Rock Quarry
  • Log Cabin
  • Tree House Village
  • Sculpture Walk

One of the the most fun places for Jeffy was the Great Lakes Garden because it involved WATER, LOTS OF WATER. He spent a lot of time floating his boat around the Great Lakes!

frederick meijer childrens garden

The Kids Sense Garden was lots of fun, with plants to see, touch, smell, and taste. Even plants with funny names or appearances are included. The Log Cabin was a great place to explore our ancestors way of living but on a much smaller scale. Tree House Village is a large interconnected tree houses with lots of places to spy nature and its inhabitants. Jeffy especially liked the rope bridge, which he could get to swaying. He spent quite a while in the Rock Quarry, excavating for treasure, or maybe just because he liked to operate the shovel.
